Welcome to Liberty Street!
Liberty Street is a Mixology Bar, Historic Pub, and Performance Venue (with really good food) located at 653-9 Massachusetts Ave in downtown Indianapolis. Opened in 2014, Liberty Street reestablished one of the oldest tavern locations along the Avenue.
In 1892 James H. Moore, Secretary of the Licensed Saloon Keepers of Indiana along with partner James B. Wilson opened the Moore & Wilson Saloon Health Office Sample Room in this building. The building continued to be used as a tavern for many years, at one point being leased to the Indianapolis Brewing Company. Park Ave was named Liberty St at this time, in fact the Liberty St name persisted until after World War II, at which point the name had taken on a different meaning.
This was the original use of the corner or “Flat Iron” building, which dates to the early 1890’s. Mass Ave had many Flat Iron buildings historically but only 4 of the original Flat Irons remain today. The adjoining taller building dates to 1872, and is one of the oldest buildings still standing on Mass Ave. It had a variety of uses throughout its history including a Harness Shop, Grocery Store, and restaurant. Both buildings had apartments on the upper floor.
The focal point of Liberty Street is the massive mahogany bar. It was built utilizing pieces from an old pharmacy cabinet that had been removed when Hook’s Drugs purchased the pharmacy. Old growth mahogany was obtained for the bar top, the goal was to create a true Pre-Prohibition Era Bar, that looked like it had been in place since the 1890’s.
Liberty Street features one of the widest selections of Craft and High End Distilled Spirits in Indianapolis, a strong rotating selection of Local and Regional Draft Craft Beers, and a growing cellar of unique local and national bottled beers. Our cocktail menu offers a variety of historic cocktails, as well as unique concoctions available nowhere else.
